5 out of 5 stars Great drive, but not worth it yet.   October 29, 2008

I built a new PC a few months ago, I have all the requisite hardware, and Blu-Ray is still too much of a headache. Don't get me wrong. The drive works brilliantly. However, as some have noted this drive requires you to get software that I think is still under par for consistency and ease of use. Some Blu ray discs are trouble free; many Blu Ray discs require too much time on Google trying to figure out how to even get it to play.

Who's to blame? Well ironically, I would put the blame on Sony. Their digital rights management (DRM) is one of the most consumer-unfriendly inventions in recent history. Even when you think you've got it figured out once and for all, they release updates that make you constantly have to find a post halfway down on some message board that explains how to get your software player to play nice with a given BR-DVD's new DRM. I will continue to struggle through this because I'm stubborn. But I'd be lying if I said I didn't regret buying into the Blu-Ray thing a bit prematurely. If you're still on the fence, go to the message boards of any of the players/decoders capable of handling Blu-Ray content: Total Media Theatre, PowerDVD, AnyDVD... Then ask yourself if it's a good thing that there is so much content related to troubleshooting Blu Ray on a HTPC.

1 out of 5 stars Not a good buy   October 14, 2008

I bought this and installed it on to my computer hoping to create an entertainment center with my PC as the hub of everything. My PC has the ATI radeon 3450 video card which supports HD and sends HDMI via a DVI/HDMI converter. For some reason watching blu ray movies just doesnt look that good. I have a 24 inch Samsung 1080P monitor and I also have a 52 inch Samsung 1080P television. When I watch blu ray on either one of them for some reason it ads black bars to the top and bottom and wont take up the full screen. The picture is grainy and just doesnt pop out as much as my HD cable channels do. It looks about as good as dvd but the garin and little spots everywhere are more obvious. Gonna have to buy a stand alone player.

5 out of 5 stars Blu-ray is exceptional.   September 23, 2008

I love my Sony BD-rom. Blu-ray is an exceptional experience (including both sound and visual appearance). I recommend it to anyone, especially now that the prices are heading lower and lower.

5 out of 5 stars Smooth Install, fast loading, no problems so far.   August 28, 2008
Layer 1-7 (Saratoga, CA United States)
It's been a few weeks since I got this. The installation went smooth, and I really did not even need to use the bundled software, as Vista perfectly detected and identified the Bluray drive. Pretty much plug and play.

I did end up buying the full version of PowerDVD8 though, HOWEVER, the bundled version is good enough to play BluRay disks, though you ONLY get two channels of output, as in stereo L/R, no multichannel... for that you must buy the full PDVD8 version. I think there was a discount when I did so, as I only paid for an upgrade from the OEM version of PDVD8 to the full, not the MSRP for the retail full version.

5 out of 5 stars Great drive   August 2, 2008

The drive installed without a hitch in my Dell XPS 410 HTPC. I did however need to purchase an HTPC capable video card in order to use it. Once I had the proper card installed the BD drive has been trouble free. NO need for a separate stand alone player with one of these! Get yourself a BD drive and a excellent video card . If your video card doesn't have true HDMI output. Make sure your audio card or motherboard has SPDIF output. This way you can still enjoy digital sound.
