5 out of 5 stars Very solid player, 3D, super-fast, tons of internet apps & dual-HDMI!   August 23, 2010

I purchased this BD player more for the fact that it has two HDMI out jacks (currently very rare) than the 3D capability, which I'm not currently using. I have a Denon 4806 receiver that I paid an arm and a leg for a few years back that unfortunately only passes 1080i through it's HDMI system. I wanted to be able to get 1080p out to my TV while still enjoying the lossless HD sound through HDMI, and the dual outputs here solved that perfectly (HDMI splitters didn't work and I don't want to use analog out connections).

Besides the obvious draw of it's 3D playback capability, the C7900 is pretty full featured player. It has built-in wireless and ethernet adapters for internet connectivity, which includes Netflix, Blockbuster, YouTube, Facebook, Pandora and a ton of others apps that are currently available. You can actually add and remove them as you see fit. Pretty impressive. Netflix streaming was excellent over wireless even with HD content and the Pandora worked perfectly too. I did not try the other apps yet. It can also update firmware from the web, with auto-notification if desired, and it prompted me to update when I did the initial setup which went without a hitch. There's internal 1GB of storage for BD-Live stuff (actually only about 600MB free out-of-the box though) or you can use the USB jack in the front for it (no rear jack). The USB also allows for reading media from thumbdrives, etc. Picture and audio quality are excellent, with the usual adjustments and presets available to you. Boot-up is almost instantaneous and BD disc loading speed (with and without Java) is super-fast, seemingly quicker than my Playstation 3.

Build quality is good. It's a small form factor, button-less front face, with a pretty cool see-through top over the disc drive area. It's illuminated, along with a 3D BD logo, with dynamic white LED's (which can be turned off if desired) and the touch-sensor transport buttons (stop, play/still, eject and power) along the front top edge of the player. The remote is non-illuminated and is pretty comfortable to hold with nicely laid-out flat buttons. Connectivity jacks are 2 HDMI out (1 audio only), 1 component and 1 composite video, 1 L/R RCA audio out, 1 optical audio out, 1 ethernet and 1 front USB jack (behind a little swing out cover). The player gets warm underneath, but it didn't feel out of the ordinary to me.

The nitpicks I have with this player are minor. You can only dim the front panel display, not turn it off completely. The on-screen display doesn't tell you the type of audio track going out (just MULTI-CH). A coaxial audio out would've been nice as an option to optical. Other than that if you're willing to pay a little premium for the 3D, this player is well worth consideration.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!!! Samsung BD-C7900   August 17, 2010

I upgraded from the Samsung 6900...which was exactly the same as the 7900 except the 7900 has two HDMI outputs...1 HDMI (video/audio) and 1 HDMI (audio). The 6900 does have 7.1 analog outputs that way the blu-ray player does the decoding for all the HD audio formats...but since my Onkyo receiver also decodes HD audio I wanted to having the settings at BITSTREAM (AUDIOPHILE). My receiver is 1.3 HDMI compatible but not 1.4 HDMI (3D ready) so I send HDMI (video/audio) to my 3D tv and the other HDMI (audio) to my receiver...the sound is INCREDIBLE. I love all the wireless features this blu-ray player has...netflix, pandora, blockbuster, and many more. Very easy to set up and use. I highly recommend both the Samsung 6900 and even more so the 7900 because of the two HDMI outputs. I have had NO problems at all with either blu-ray player. The picture quality and audio are top notch...PERFECTION!!!

5 out of 5 stars Good player   August 3, 2010

I think the other guy has a screen calibration problem or the unit is in an enclosed space... I haven't noticed anything wrong with this player or any screen discoloration and given proper ventilation, it doesn't seam to really get hot either. My cable box is way hotter by comparison... all you have to do is keep it in open air, don't put electronics in enclosed spaces, put them on open and non-cluttered shelves and they will not overheat. It's a great player, it's extremely fast and faster then any other blue-ray I've player I've seen yet. The 1080p up-scaling tags along with players that cost three times as much and it's loaded with features. It also plays with older TV's well, hence the 2nd and more compatible hdmi connection.

3 out of 5 stars Overheats, (TV produces RED colored screen: See UPDATE)   July 30, 2010

First, I bought a BD-C6900. I noticed that unit was too hot at the bottom of the unit when I was playing a Blue Ray disc. When I was first watching the Monsters and Aliens disc, I noticed RED horizontal lines showing up and going away briefly. Then, next day or so, the Player started to produce solid transparent RED color on the TV screen, on the entire screen. Bottom of the unit was very hot as well. This Red color never went away. I returned the defective unit back to Amazon. Amazon's return policy is impressive.

Then, I bought BD-C7900, thinking it will behave differently. When I first connected the new unit to the TV, and applied power, I noticed out of the box, unwanted RED screen showed up on my Samsung PN63C7000 TV. After changing the menu, and stopping the Blue Ray disk, screen changed back to normal colors. I was able to play Blue Ray disk after that. RED screen did not show again during playback session. But the bottom of the unit was UNBEARABLY HOT, IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE TO TOUCH IT FOR MORE THAN 4-5 SECONDS. I am sure the overheating will definitely degrade the reliability very fast and kill the unit very soon; I am sure the junction temperatures of the commercial type semiconductor devices are operating beyond their allowable limits. Before watching the blue ray movie, I used some stands that raised the unit about ½ inch so that heat is dissipated better. It was still hot.

After a couple of days, unit started to produce red screen constantly. Occasionally, when it was first turned on screen was normal, then turned RED. I am returning the defective unit back.

Other observations:
BD-C6900 loaded the disc much faster than BD-C7900.
Firmware could not be updated for BD-C7900 via internet, maybe there was no new firmware.
When it was not producing RED color, picture quality was great.

UPDATE 8/4/2010: Ok. Here is an update: Now I verified that the Red screen problem is not because of the Blue ray player, it is because of the bad HDMI input circuitry of the TV. Since I did not have any other source than the blue ray player, I was not able to test and verify it at the time. I verified that the Samsung PN63C7000 TV is producing the Red colors anytime I switch to HDMI inputs (It has 4 HDMI inputs, all producing same red screen). I was suspecting the 10-foot "high speed HDMI cable" from monoprice causing the discoloration problem. I connected the same cable to the HDMI inputs of my other LED TV and the screen was good. I used 4 ft "high speed HDMI cable" on both TVs, Samsung PN63C7000 TV produced red colors, the other older LED TV produced the normal colors. When the TV is in TV mode or Internet@TV mode (Such as netflix, local network, etc.), it displays the channels correctly without any discoloration. By the way, PN63C7000 TV suffers from the same Motion Judder Cancellation issue but I understand that issue can be resolved. I did not notice any buzzing from my TV that some other owners are complaining about.

I am not sure what caused the TV to go bad in the first couple of days of usage. It may be result of Blue Ray player overheating excessively and producing out of tolerance signals to the HDMI inputs of the TV thus causing the sensitive TV input circuitry to fail.

Hope this helps.
