Product Description
The BDP-80 is a full-featured universal Blu-ray Disc player that supports BD Profile 2.0 (BD-Live and BonusView), DVD-Video, DVD-Audio, Super Audio CD (SACD), HDCD, CD and other popular media formats such as AVCHD, MKV video files, digital photos and music. Sharing the same decoder and similarly optimized firmware as OPPO's award-winning BDP-83, the BDP-80 features fast disc load times, quick response to user operations, and robust audio and video controls. In contrast to the BDP-83, which utilizes an onboard VRS by Anchor Bay video processor, the BDP-80 design has been optimized for use as a digital audio/video transport, emphasizing the accuracy of its digital audio/video outputs. At the same time, the BDP-80 is versatile enough to be used as a stand-alone universal Blu-ray player, thanks to its full array of output connections and audio/video decoding capabilities.

2 out of 5 stars Mixed bag   September 2, 2010
G. Franco (Austin, Texas United States)
I was looking for a Universal player to replace my Denon 5910 which is pre- blu ray era. Since BDP-80 is capable of sending all hi res audio formats to my AVP via HDMI, I though I could use it as a transport only and save some $$$ that way. It didn't work out, audio quality, specially for SACD is not good compared to the Denon analog outputs through the same AVP so I'm having to keep my Denon plus, as a Blu Ray player, I have had a lot of issues with certain disks like Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel which will make the player unresponsive (power off is the only way out). Other movies will sometimes lock it up (like Avatar) but if you try enough times it will work. When it works, video quality is very good and response time even though slow, is better than most players I have seen.

2 out of 5 stars bitstream audio mode signal fades sometime   August 15, 2010

2 stars for this unit after reading praised comments over it's "quality" other than functionality to justify the higher price(you can get a top notch sony or panasonic player with 3Ds and netflix etc for 299.99...)and this unit doesn't decode bitstream right. Bought this unit based on close friend recommendation and unusual high positive reviews from Amazon. The most emphrasized commemts I saw over here about the general brand is the compatibilty of playing various media formats, SVCD, DVD-A...etc. Actually I wonder which brand isn't? As I remember the DVD era, if you want a dvd player to play the most variety types of media just go to walmart and buy the 49.99 ones. Usually the cheap one doesn't have sophisticated code encriptions to stop you from playing low quality discs. Ok, back to the point. This unit of course have plus and minus. The goodies included high quality packaging with environmental friendly bags, fast loading time, avaliable 7.1 analog outputs. Picture quality, I am sorry I can't tell any difference from my ps3. However, the reason I am returning this unit is when I put HDMI output to bitstream, the audio output signal disappear once in awhile during play back. It happens when I watched the dark knight and the transformer 2. Everytime it happens my receiver shows no singal coming from the player. The audio menue setting remained same. I have to turn it off and back on to get the signal back. Any one of your sunshines have comments after reading this? I know I will be under attack from the 5 stars giver. I am listening...

2 out of 5 stars resume function does NOT work   August 6, 2010

I just got this blu-ray player and based on so many good reviews here, I certainly had high hope of this one which should get all basic things right. However, the first disc I played is Kung Fu Panda, and resume play does not work. Yeah, I tried a couple of times to make sure it is not my fault, but every time I turn off the player and power it on, the disc plays right from the beginning. The sequence of actions would then become:

1) wait for ## seconds for player/disc to load after power on or play button is pressed
2) commercial starts,
3) press skip, skip, ... until you see the menu
4) press enter/play
5) press skip, skip, ... (backward, ... if you go past the point) until you see what is left off from the last stop
or if you have really good memory, do
5) use Goto function, type in the hour/minute/second of the last stop point,

Yeah, that is fun button exercise if you have enough time or patience. And it appears this problem not only applies to Kung Fu Panda, but a number of other Blu-Ray discs I tried so it is a common issue with Blu-Ray player/disc. This is certainly backward development since the old analog tape or VHS days, where simply pressing play will continue from the last stop point.

In the end, this unit is going back to Amazon. Thanks for Amazon for a great and convenient return process.
