Firmware upgrade can kill the unit! July 9, 2010 Stephen T. Crye (Earth) I don't often pan a product or a company, but I am obligated to warn the public about this.
Bought the unit at Xmas last year. Seemed to work ok, we have not used it much. Connected to a Samsung 32" LCD TV. Just purchased Avatar on Blu-ray, sat down to enjoy it. When we loaded the disk it complained it used the "latest technology" and our player might have a problem, but after chugging a while it finally loaded. We watched for about an hour, then we needed to do some other things, so we stopped the movie and turned off the player. When we tried to watch again, this time after the complaint that the movie might not play, and the system displayed a dire warning about needing a firmware upgrade.
So, I went to the Samsung site, found a new firmware upgrade from May 31, 2010. (BEv2.09_100519_BDP1600_XAA.RUF) Used the USB method to do the upgrade. All seemed to go well, and it chugged through the various steps. But, it never finished, just stayed stuck for three hours on the "do not power off" step 3. Finally I unplugged the unit and plugged it back in, but as expected, it is a brick now. I then looked on line, and see that many, many people have had the same exact problem!
Although Samsung has agreed to fix (or replace) my unit free, and even pay for shipping, I'm really tired of Samsung quality problems and hours on hold with Samsung tech support.
Piece of Junk April 27, 2010 Love Technology 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this Blu-Ray player because I like Samsung products.
This player will not play Blu-Ray disks. I did the firmware update for this unit. You know that this unit had to be really bad because they came out with a new version of this product BD-P1590C.
Customer service is a joke. I called them and they took all of my information and said that I would have to fax my proof of purchase to them and they will call me back in two days! Ya right. Anything to stop you from returning the player for servicing. What happened to putting the proof of purchase in the box with the item you are returning. Well the computer was not working so the rep said she would email me my case number later today. Of course it never happened. So I decided to take the path of least resistance and return it for a refund.
My next player will not be a Samsung, it may be a Sony or LG.
Read carefully... March 5, 2010 Kevin R. Bray 1 out of 5 found this review helpful
Despite the title, this is "wifi ready" player. "wifi ready" means there is no wifi components whatsoever included. It does say "wifi ready" in the ad, but the title leads one to believe that is has wifi included. It does not.
The product is still nice, but they should rephrase the title of the ad.
Great features ..but Faulty product March 1, 2010 Rwilliams (RED OAK, TX, US) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I committed the cardinal sin. I bought something online without reading reviews. I specifically was looking for a nice blu-Ray DvD player to compliment my new plasma 50" samsung . I spent a couple hours running cables through the wall mounting all of them with a panel. After I got it all setup I didn't have a blu-ray so i started messing around with the features. The netflix streaming and the youtube streaming were great. The vid quality of the youtube isn't as good as the computer but it was still fun to sit in the living room and browse through. They were pretty simple to setup and get going. The problem came when I decided. I don't have a blu-ray but I do have a new copy of Gladiator so i put it in there. Bamb. "This disc can not be played" so I'm like damn. I put in disc after disc no matter what kind, even audio CD's. So i thought oh well most people are having problems after they update the firmware. So i'm like well it doesn't work already so what is it going to.
btw I ran ethernet cable from my router to the living room through the cealing and walls. I had heard some where having problems with the wireless dropping. Anyway I went to run the firmware update and i get a message saying that it is already the most updated version. I am assuming that is where the problem comes from. Either way I tried all the troubleshooting techniques and directions. Nothing worked. I will be sending it back later today. I went ahead and purchased a new one last night and it seems to be working great.
the Sony bd-N460 i believe is the model.
to sum it up. a guy said it earlier ... Do you feel lucky? that is what you get with this machine.
NOT wifi ready! February 1, 2010 Corey Scott (Rocklin, California, United States) 7 out of 11 found this review helpful
I recieved this blu-ray player today, only to discover that it is NOT "wifi ready", as the product description says. It is "wifi capable", if you buy an additional Samsung wireless adapter, which is currently over $70 even on eBay. You can't even use a 3rd party wireless adapter, you HAVE TO use the one from Samsung. This was a deal-breaker for me, because I specifically purchased this model so I could stream Netflix and not have to run a cable all the way across my house and up the staircase. I promptly packaged it back up and returned it, and will be ordering an LG player for cheaper, with better ratings, and just live with the fact that I will need to run a 100ft ethernet cable to my tv.
