1 out of 5 stars Amazon Videos   August 25, 2010
Jojo
This player fails to download and play Amazon Video rentals but the worst part of it is Panasonic support. Virtually non existent. When I contacted Amazon they told me that their service is having problems with Panasonic bluray players and that they are working with Panasonic to resolve the issue. Unfortunately, that was 3 weeks ago. I recently got update to the firmware but it did not fix this problem. Until it does I cannot recommend this player. Furthermore every time I call Panasonic service they end up hanging up on me without answering the phone.

5 out of 5 stars I Got Great Performance for a Low Price   July 21, 2010

Being electronically challenged, I found this unit easy to use. Once I try to play a 3-D film, I'll know it's perfect.

4 out of 5 stars Panasonic Blue Ray   April 24, 2010

I bought this unit after hearing about it at a high end stereo store. This is the perfect dvd player if you have a stereo receiver that does not have an HDMI input. It accepts analog inputs. It seems hard to really get into the fine tuning for the analog but if you can do it it's great. If your receiver accepts an HDMI input then I suggest the Panasonic BD-60 instead of the BD-80

3 out of 5 stars Great player... if you don't mind waiting 2 minutes to load DVD   April 23, 2010
movie lover
We bought a new Panasonice blu-ray player in December 2009. I love the picture and sound quality. When the player is turned off and you press the top button to open the tray door, be prepared to wait about 10 seconds for it to cycle and open. Then after the player wakes up enough and then close the door and press the play button on the remote, you may wait up to two minutes for it to load the DVD. Then as the dvd plays the previews for other movies if you press the "top menu" button on the remote you get a message that "not operational" so you must instead skip past all the previews to get to the film. Our old Panasonic player would open the tray door immediately and of course we didn't have to wait long for the movie to load either.

Another problem I see with this player is when you stop the movie to go eat or do something else and come back. The player will shut off after awhile if not being used. Turn the power back on and press play again hoping to resume where it left of. Not always. At times it will completely load from the very beginning again. I've checked the owner's manual and can't see why this happens.

Recently I wanted to update the firmware on this player so I followed the manuals instructions going to the Panasonic tech support web site and looking for any updates. At first, I couldn't find any from the web page and I finally typed in a search of firmware and found one. Following the instuctions I put the update on an unused CD-R and printed out the insturctions to update on the DVD player. When I attempted to bring up the current firmware version as instructed nothing happened. But I proceeded to load the CD-R into the player and again following the online instructions the DVD player shut off and then turned on again and spit out the CD-R without showing any update took place. According to Panasonic firmware updates take up to 8 minutes. I know I have the correct file, followed the steps to uncompress the file and load it onto the CD-R. So now the update isn't installed and I have no clue why it didn't work. Back to the drawing board.

Oh for the simplicity of my last player.

4 out of 5 stars great player   April 23, 2010

After a bad first experience with a BD player from Shamsung I spent the extra few bucks for this Panasonic and i'm glad I did. Player perfroms flawlessly, not one lock-up or HDCP hand-shake problem after months of use. The OS set-up menu's guide you through your video/audio options quickly and easilly.Picture quality is fantastic with a nice sharp pic, smooth motion rendering, and excellent color saturation. Chapter skip and fast-fowward is also free of glithces or lock-up's.

Con's: I don't really have any gripes that would keep me from buying this again, buuutttt,
1)like all BD it is slow to boot a movie.

2)The remote could have used a back-lit or simply easier to operate primary function buttons in dark rooms.

3) the black pedestal (full video black) on this player is elevated even in "cinema mode", requiring the brightness to be compensated for in your display device.

4)Some ocasional scaling artifacts in 720P

Overall a very good player and one I can easilly recoemend at this price point.
