Amazon.com Saved from the brink of cancellation by its loyal fanbase, Star Trek's third and final season rewarded them with a number of memorable episodes. Tight budgets and slipping creative control, however, made it the series' most uneven season, though it did have some of the coolest episode titles ("For the World Is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky," "Is There in Truth No Beauty," "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield"). Some of the best moments involved a gunfight at the OK Corral ("Spectre of the Gun"), a knock-down drag-out sword battle with the Klingons aboard the Enterprise ("Day of the Dove"), the ship getting caught in an ever-tightening spacial net ("The Tholian Web"), TV's first interracial kiss ("Plato's Stepchildren," and it should be easy to guess who participated), Sulu taking command ("The Savage Curtain"), and Kirk's switching bodies with an ex-love interest ("Turnabout Intruder"). The 2008 DVD set benefits from the same remastering given to the other two seasons, though only the first was released in high definition (the now-defunct HD DVD format). Still, the episodes are substantially cleaned up to the point where they look quite good, rather than jarringly fuzzy to the modern viewer. And there are some new visual effects that are well-done, and obtrusive only to the strictest fans. Compare, for example, the dramatic close-up of the green-glowing U.S.S. Defiant in "The Tholian Web" with the original effect, which had the ship floating in a green haze. New bonus features are 11 more minutes of rare footage from extra Billy Blackburn; "Collectible Trek," a 14-minute discussion of rare Trek items, filmed in 2004 with the rest of the bonus content but not included on the previous DVD set; and the newly filmed "Captain's Log: Bob Justman," an affectionate nine-minute tribute to the series producer. Otherwise, the set retains almost all the special features from the 2004 set, including the features on Walter Koenig, George Takei, and James Doohan (who died the following year), plus the two versions of the series pilot, "The Cage," a restored color version and the original, never-aired version that alternates between color and black and white. Starring Jeffery Hunter as Captain Pike, Leonard Nimoy as a relatively emotional Spock, and Majel Barrett (the future Nurse Chapel and Mrs. Gene Roddenberry) as a frosty Number One, this pilot was rejected, but a second was commissioned, "Where No Man Has Gone Before," now considered the "official" beginning of the series. But "The Cage" is very recognizably Star Trek with its far-out concepts (telepathic aliens collecting species samples), sexy humanoid women, character development, and of course cheesy costumes and special effects. Footage was later reused in the season 1 two-parter, "The Menagerie." --David Horiuchi

Pretty good, but issues July 26, 2010 Serious Reader (Dallas, TX USA) While I'm pleased to be able to complete the BluRay collection with season 3, I've been having troubles with the discs themselves. On several of the shows, the "original" effects appear to be missing - when I start the "Original Effects" version, it still has the enhanced effects.
This may be my player, but if I press "STOP" and then try to resume with "PLAY", the disc starts over; it's very annoying, and doesn't do that on other discs.
Not a huge problem, because the new effects are great, but I'm wondering if others have this problem as well.
Excellent Collection! July 20, 2010 Jennifer Wagoner (Cincinnati, OH USA) We purchased Star Trek: The Original Series box sets separately because it was cheaper than buying the three seasons together. We love the blu-rays, the updated scenes and the ability to see the original version as well. We would recommend to any Star Trek fan!
Remastered and stunning! July 9, 2010 Corey L. Oakes (TX) Ths is a must have Star Trek collection. It is the last season of the original series.
Along with the first and second seasons (and the animated series in my opinion) it is the cornerstone of the franchise; the canon that all the later installments are based upon.
I remember watching the original Star Trek on a black and white television that had bad reception and even worse audio. I vowed one day I would get a stereo colorized television with large antennae so that I could see Star Trek, and other shows of interest to me, the way they were broadcast.
I now have the color television (minus the antennae) and have been buying DVD collections of all those shows that I remebered wanting to thorougly enjoy as a kid. (and I am!)
This collection does not contain the episodes the way they were broadcast. They are better, much better.
I am not saying that because I am suddenly experiencing the episodes in color and in stereo, either.
The scenes that used to show the Enterprise orbiting a planet (in the original series and in The Next Generation) were rather two dimensional and non-descript. The way they have been completely reaccomplished with computer graphics in these remastered editions is very stunning. It makes everything seem realistic and more believable to me.
Purists hate the changes, but I have to agree with the special effects guys who worked on the original series (from the interviews on the DVD's), when they comment on the remartered editions, each one acknowledges that the end result is more than what they could have ever hoped for.
The budget for the original show was very small, and they had to cut corners and meet overly demanding deadlines. If they could have spent more time and money on detail they would have. As it is, the original special effects were good for the 1960's, but the technology of today has helped to bring out the visions of the original special effects engineers. (paraphrasing from the many interviews)
Specialists 'cleaned up' the 40+ year-old masters by digitizing the film and assigning teams to go frame-by-frame filling in gaps, brightening up the colors and removing damage that had occurred from old age and wear and tear. They did a tremendous job.
I could not be more pleased with the final product.
For the purists, maybe Paramount will release future Blu-Ray versions of The Original Series episodes with the raw data pull from the masters included with the cleaned up version. That would be a good 50th Anniversary gift from Paramount. What would there be to complain about if they did that?
Personally, it would remind me of when I was watching the show on a black and white television with spotty mono-audio. I'm nostalgic every now and then, but I definitely prefer to experience Star Trek in this newly remastered version. I can't wait until they re-master The Next Generation and replace the animatronics and claymation with CGI as well.
Kudos for the transfer and image quality July 3, 2010 Dylan Jones (San Francisco, CA United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I'm a long-time ST TOS fan and previously had the complete series on DVD. I'm restricting my feedback to the BluRay quality and features here, as my bias would otherwise demand a "5 star' rating. The quality of the transfer seems uniformly excellent and the new, alternative special effects are, if anything, understated to blend into the original footage -- and the effect is successful. (To be honest, I don't see what objection anyone could muster for these new special effects as they are faithful to the style of the original and appear for only brief moments.) The sound is equally good and surprisingly lively, even in stereo. This edition of ST TOS contains several features (documentaries, interviews, voice-overs), however, the majority have appeared in previous releases on DVD, so don't let that be your deciding factor: If you want to see the show in near-pristine condition, with the best color transfer and sound remixing yet, and some fun 'upgrades' to special effects sequences thrown in, then it's a no-brainer. If you care more about the storylines than the appearance, you'd be forgiven for not buying. ;-)
A lackluster end to the series... May 30, 2010 Christopher P. Mcgee (Lexington, KY USA) Not much to say about the show in the third season that hasn't already been said, so I'll restrict my comments to the Blu-ray format.
Sadly, there isn't much new in here in terms of bonuses. There isn't even a single episode with "Starfleet Access", like there were in the first season and, to a lesser degree, the second season. Granted, there isn't much about this season worthy of much commentary, but it still would have been nice to see some.
The original pilot and unaired second pilot, along with the extended version of "The Cage" are nice to have, but they almost feel like filler. Even the Blu-ray case is thinner than the first two seasons'.
I rate it three stars for the lack of effort on the part of the producers to take advantage of Blu-ray and provide more commentaries and specials.
