Product Description Sony Pictures Hancock (Blu-ray)
Amazon.com Hancock turns the standard superhero movie inside-out: The title character (Will Smith) can fly, has superstrength, and is invulnerable, but he's also a sloppy, alcoholic jerk who causes millions of dollars in property damage whenever he bothers to fight crime. When he saves the life of a public-relations agent named Ray (Jason Bateman, Arrested Development), Ray decides to improve Hancock's image--starting by having Hancock surrender himself to the authorities and go to prison for his lawless behavior. The idea is that once he's in prison, the crime rate will go up, and people will start to realize Hancock might be of value after all. This is only the first act of Hancock--from there, the movie takes several clever turns that shouldn't be revealed. Hancock isn't a great movie (among other things, director Peter Berg overuses close-ups with a hand-held camera to a degree that may cause motion sickness), but it is an extremely entertaining one. The script, which holds together far better than most superhero movies, has a propulsive plot, good dialogue, some compassion for its characters, and even an actual idea or two. The spectacular action at least gestures towards obeying the laws of physics, which actually makes the special effects more vivid. The three leads (Smith, Bateman, and Charlize Theron as Ray's wife, Mary) deftly balance the movie's mixture of comedy, action, and drama. All in all, a smart subversive twist on a genre that all too often takes itself all too seriously. --Bret Fetzer Stills from Hancock (click for larger image)

help the economy January 4, 2009 brett (california) Save your money people. This has got to be Will Smith's worst movie ever. The Even Stevens movie was better than this, and that movie tanked for adult audiences. The plot was very thin. The "super-her0" was a drunk and caused more damage than the criminals. He falls in love with the only woman he cannot have. I am not saying Will's acting is bad, just the script. He chose poorly when he accepted this role.
I regret watching this movie January 1, 2009 K. Casper This movie was incredibly stupid and predictable. Also there was way to much foul language. I regret that I threw away money to rent this move, as well as the time wasted to watch it. I defiantly will not recommend. If I could give it zero stars I would.
Deadhouseplants' Review: Hancock (Blu-Ray) December 31, 2008 Deadhouseplants (Tualatin, Oregon, United States) When making a superhero movie, having a villain of equal power and stature is vital. Plot: For the most part, the first fifty minutes of Hancock is actually pretty good. The major problem in superhero movies is gaining insight into a hero and relating to them. This is where Superman Begins had trouble, where the first installment of X-Men was a little better, and Batman Begins was marginally pretty good. In Hancock, you have a sense of comfort in your hero, and feel no sense of superhero corniness or patronization that afflicts most superhero movies. Yes, he's got these superpowers, however, he's got character flaws that bring him down to beneath the people he wants to protect. Okay, so where does this movie go wrong? Well, when the greatest fight scene is against Charlize Theron, and she's not even a villain. You've failed in making a superhero movie. The formula for a superhero movie is easy, have a good guy, and have a bad guy of equal quality. This is where Dark Knight excelled, and Hancock comes short. When your main antagonist is a college professor who I swear had less than 200 words of dialogue, you're left with an empty feeling. Which is bad, since the introduction of this movie was pretty brilliant for superhero movie standards. Video: 1080p 2.40:1 ratio The picture is pretty clear for the most part. However, the initial chase scene of the freeway is kind of grainy. I would expect this has to do with it being really CGI driven. Audio: Dolby TrueHD 5.1 Extras: There is no commentary track, which is replaced instead with a PIP video diary. I actually found this pretty entertaining, especially the part with Reno 911's Thomas Lennon. It's worth checking out The majority of special features are technical and promotional featurettes. The second disc is the Digital Copy, which will work with only PSP's. That's pretty much it for the extras. My Two-Cents: The curse of this film was the summer blockbuster hype mixed with expectations of Dark Knight. I knew right off I would wait to see this movie on Blu-Ray, and I'm glad to see I was right. As I said, the first 50 to 60 minutes is a perfect setup for a superhero film. However, it falls off quickly from there on out. I honestly believe it's worth a viewing, but just not for multiple viewings. My Verdict: RENT
Not A Bad Attempt At Another Angle On A Superhero Film! December 30, 2008 Ervin Griffin (Bluefield, WV) Hancock is a different take on a superhero. He isn't beloved like Superman or Spider-Man in their films nor is he respected like Batman in his. Rather, he's an obnoxious jerk who just happens to have super abilities who only fights crime when he feels like it or when someone really annoys him! To be honest, I like this take because not many of us would be a goody two shoes. Hancock is decidedly more human despite his super human powers. In the end, he learns a lesson in humility and finds that he has more in common with the normal man than originally thought. On the film as a whole, it is rather funny. My favorite part is when he voluntarily goes to jail and many of the inmates that he helped put there confront him. Now, I don't know about you but if someone had super powers and was in jail, I think that's one inmate I'd leave alone! Better yet, if he gave a threat saying "if you don't move, your head is going up his a**", I think that would be a sign of "move b**ch, get out the way" (with apologizes to Ludacris). While the plot isn't overly deep, there is a message there and there is a unforseen twist involving Will Smith's character and co-star Charlize Theron! I won't reveal what it is but its a good one! My aunt got me the blu-ray version of this film and, needless to say, the film looks crisp and clean! I haven't looked at the bonus features yet but I will update this review when I do. On the film itself, its either a love it or leave it situation. You either like it or you don't. I personally did.
Great Will Smith December 28, 2008 Rebecca L. Ortwein (NKY) Funny, catching, and just when you expect it to get boring it lights up again. Strange story, but just what you need when every other movie seems to have the same storyline. Not your common marvel hero.
